How to get to Port Fairy Port Fairy is 290 kilometres west of Melbourne. You can drive along the Princes Highway, which takes about 3 1/2 hours or you could take the scenic route via the Great Ocean Road, it is about 7 hours drive, but gives you the opportunity to experience south-west Victoria's spectacular coastline. A train or coach departs Melbourne's Southern Cross Station three times a day. Port Fairy is just over 600 kilometres east of Adelaide, driving via Keith takes around 7, but gives you the chance to explore the Coonawarra region on the way. Port Fairy is an historic fishing village with old world charm and modern living combined. Wide streets are lined by nineteenth century cottages, old stone churches, boarding houses and inns. Many fine examples of architecture from the 1800s remain, and more than 50 buildings are classified by the National Trust.
